Day 1 (Thursday, 25 June 2009)

9:00 - 9:30 / Opening Session: Welcome and Keynote Remarks

9:30 - 10:15 / Role of UNEP and UNESCO in Iraq and UNEP-UNESCO Project

An overview of roles and activities by UNEP and UNESCO in Iraq to date was presented, focusing on environmental management and natural/cultural resource management. An introduction to the UNEP-UNESCO project was provided.

10:15 - 10:45 / Coffee Break

10:45 - 12:30 / Presentation and Discussion: Current and Historical Management and Development of the Iraqi Marshlands

In this session, an overview of current and historical environmental, cultural, and socio-economic management initiatives in Iraq, focusing on the Iraqi Marshlands, was presented by ministry representatives. Each ministry also discussed its role and responsibilities associated with natural and cultural management related to the World Heritage Programme. A presentation of the planning and development for the Marshlands area was provided. Local conditions in the Iraqi Marshlands and the community needs from the perspectives of local communities were also highlighted. Discussions followed.

14:00 - 15:30 / Presentation and Discussion: UNEP-UNESCO Project and World Heritage Programme

A presentation on the UNEP-UNESCO Project, targeting main areas of activity, was given. As the project utilizes the World Heritage inscription process as a tool, an introduction to the World Heritage Convention and the World Heritage Inscription Process were also provided, focusing on the national obligations and mixed-site management.

15:45 - 17:00 / Discussion: UNEP-UNESCO Project

Feedback on the project activities including management mechanism, potential areas for targeted implementation and ensuring local stakeholder participation was solicited.

Day 2 (Friday, 26 June 2009)

8:00 - 8:10 / Welcome Remarks by UNEP and UNESCO Co-Chairs

8:10 - 10:00 / Panel Discussion on Donor initiatives and coordination

In this session, each panellist provided a 10-minute overview of their initiatives and results related to promoting sustainable management of Iraqi Marshlands, including potential areas of cooperation with the UNEP-UNESCO Project.

10:00 - 10:15 / Coffee Break

10:15 - 10:45 / Reflections from Iraqi Perspectives and Summary of Panel Discussions

Reflections from the Iraqi Perspectives were provided. The co-chairs then summarized the panel discussions and formulate recommendations to promote cooperation/coordination for the project.
